I didn’t mean to not write this up for February; it just… didn’t happen. So you get two months at once.
Assuredly, many of you will be shocked, just shocked, that most of my viewing tends to be shows with gay characters/topics, from Feud: Capote vs. the Swans to RuPaul’s Drag Race to the Andy Warhol Diaries documentary series. (The latter, BTW, is maybe the only good use of AI I’ve yet seen; having an AI voice read Warhol’s diaries makes all the sense in the world. I highly suspect he would’ve loved that.)
Sort Of ended its run in February. I loved the series for its representation but wished it were a bit better; also, 7even is possibly the most obnoxious non-villain character I’ve seen in a series in I-don’t-know-how-long. I actively loathed that narcissist, but am eager to see what Bilal Baig does moving forward. Abbott Elementary launched its third season, and is… okay. Much like a Modern Family it would appear that its debut season was its strongest, and it may be a matter of diminishing returns from here on, but for now I’m sticking with it. (Lisa Ann Walter in particular is a delight.)
I saw Happy Together in a theater as part of their V-Day series and… really, really disliked it. Maybe Wong Kar-Wai just isn’t for me? The silly throwaway Down Low was a lot more fun, if largely empty calories (but a good palate cleanser). But after his Netflix series Bonding (RIP), I’ll follow writer-director Rightor Doyle to the ends of the earth.
Will and Grace is an always go-to comfort watch for me, especially its first five or so seasons. The same for Schitt’s Creek. RuPaul’s Drag Race has served me well as just-home-from-work-unwinding viewing, though I think my series rewatch may be done after S12. (And my god, the current S16 has been a chore; almost none of these bitches seem like nice people, and they’re increasingly unpleasant to watch. In contrast, S2 of UK vs the World was lots of fun, and I was delighted by who got the crown.) I can also always count on films from Appalshop, more and more of them posted on their YT channel, to my delight. Their work is vital and must-see for a better understanding of Appalachia.
And Top Chef is back, yay! Kristen Kish is a natural as the new host.
